In the world of reaching the first page in Google SERPs, we have to confront the over optimization updates that the Search Engines throw at us.

But today we will discuss how to stay off their radar altogether. There is a simple but effective solution to solving this issue. It’s the power of LSI keywords.

What are LSI Keywords and how do they work?

Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI) refers to Hummingbird’s ability to understand the meaning of the language used within a piece of content. There’s a mathematical algorithm behind it, of course, that identifies patterns in the relationships between the terms and concepts.

What are these Keywords and how can they help with over optimization?  LSI keyword is just a fancy way of saying related, similar or synonym words to your main keyword phrase.

So for example if you write an article which has its main keyword “Alphabet” it could be about helping kids learn to write or about Google’s rebranding strategy.

LSI keywords will help Search Engines know if it’s one or the other. If you use them to your advantage, you can eliminate over optimization as well.

How to find LSI Keywords and never worry about over optimization again?

If you have Squirrly WP plugin, the task is quite simple. Consider the topic you want to write about. Let’s say “social media marketing.” Go to the Squirrly Keyword Research tool and click on the green arrow on the right.

LSI1

Then put your keyword in the field.

LSI2

If you press the “Do the research” button, the tool will generate a list of LSI keywords, as in the image bellow.

You can use one of the first three phrases in the list as your main keyword and then use the rest as LSI Keywords that will support your main Keyword in ranking.

If you can’t decide on one subject for your article, or your piece of content is at the intersection of two main areas, then you can use them both. For example, let’s say I’ll write about “social media marketing” for “real estate companies.”

I can add the second subject as a second keyword and do the research again.

LSI4

It will generate an even longer list that will take into account both topics you want to write about.

How to use LSI keywords properly?

Through the content you create, you’ll leave the LSI keywords like some breadcrumbs. You can include them anywhere in the article.

  • Title
  • Header
  • Permalinks
  • Anchor texts
  • Beginning paragraph
  • Ending paragraph
  • Tags
  • Metadata

The great part is that instead of using the same keyword, again and again, you can use one of the LSI keywords from the list and never risk over optimizing your content.

There is a small trick for cases like my previous example with “Alphabet”. If you want to make sure that the search engines know you are referring to the rebranding tactics you’d need to use LSI keywords at least once in the same sentence with your primary keyword.

For example: “The company behind the search giant decided to change its name to “Alphabet,” to separate its core Internet business from several of its most ambitious projects.”

“search giant” and “Internet business” act as LSI Keywords in this fragment. They make sure that the crawlers will know your piece of content has nothing to do with teaching toddlers and everything to do with Google.

No over optimization and better ranking than before

For your SEO efforts to reach the top make sure you keep away from the dodgy tactics of the past. Stuffing your keyword on a page won’t take you anywhere but down when Google’s black and white animals find you.

So next time the Squirrly Live Assistant tells you’ve reached an Over Optimization limit, consider changing your main keyword with an LSI keyword. It will even help your site rank better than before.

    • Great question!

NO. It doesn’t consider it over-optimization and that’s why it’s a great idea to use LSI.

However, please make sure that you will not over optimize for the LSI keywords you choose.

If for example, you optimize for “Alphabet” and then you use the LSI “Search Giant”, you must make sure that you do NOT over optimize for “Search Giant”.

    • You’re welcome! I’m glad it helps.
